Diagnostic & Therapeutic Disc Injections

At Paragon Sport Spine & Wellness, we provide both Diagnostic and Therapeutic Disc Injections to help patients suffering from neck pain caused by issues within the intervertebral discs. These injections are designed to either diagnose the source of pain or provide relief from chronic neck pain caused by disc-related conditions.

What are Diagnostic Disc Injections?

Diagnostic Disc Injections, also known as Discography, involve injecting a contrast dye into the intervertebral disc to determine whether a specific disc is the source of your neck pain. This procedure is used to evaluate disc-related pain and is often done prior to surgical interventions like spinal fusion.

The goal of a diagnostic disc injection is to provoke pain in the disc suspected of causing your symptoms, confirming whether or not the disc is the pain generator. During the procedure, your physician monitors the response and imaging to identify the problematic disc.

What are Therapeutic Disc Injections?

Therapeutic Disc Injections are designed to treat disc-related neck pain. These injections typically involve administering a corticosteroid and anesthetic mixture into or around the problematic disc. This reduces inflammation and alleviates pain caused by disc degeneration, herniation, or other disc-related conditions.

Unlike diagnostic injections, which are used to pinpoint the source of pain, therapeutic injections are intended to relieve pain and reduce inflammation.

How Do Disc Injections Relieve Neck Pain?

  • Diagnostic Disc Injections help identify the specific disc causing pain, guiding future treatment decisions. If a disc is identified as the pain source, further treatments, such as physical therapy or surgery, can be considered.
  • Therapeutic Disc Injections directly reduce inflammation and relieve pressure on the nerves, offering significant pain relief for patients suffering from conditions like disc degeneration or herniated discs.

Conditions Treated by Disc Injections

Disc Injections are commonly used for patients suffering from:

  • Degenerative Disc Disease
  • Herniated Discs
  • Disc Bulging
  • Spinal Stenosis
  • Radiculopathy (nerve pain)

By targeting the discs and the surrounding area, these injections can provide both diagnostic insight and therapeutic relief for various neck conditions.

Are Disc Injections Safe?

Disc Injections, both diagnostic and therapeutic, are considered safe when performed by a trained medical professional. These procedures are done under live imaging guidance (fluoroscopy) to ensure accuracy and safety.

Potential side effects include:

  • Temporary increase in pain following a diagnostic injection
  • Minor discomfort at the injection site
  • Rarely, infection or bleeding

Patients typically experience some temporary soreness, but significant complications are uncommon. The use of fluoroscopic guidance minimizes risks and ensures precision.

What to Expect After the Procedure

Following a Diagnostic Disc Injection, your physician will assess your response to the injection to determine the next steps in your treatment plan. If the injection successfully identifies the source of pain, additional therapies or surgery may be considered.

After a Therapeutic Disc Injection, patients often experience pain relief within a few days. The effects of the injection can last several months, allowing patients to engage in physical therapy and other rehabilitative treatments that support long-term recovery.
